2016 Prelude Vineyards Chardonnay

The Prelude Vineyards label focuses on the benchmark varietals of the region and represent the first release Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from Leeuwin Estate each vintage. They are site expressive wines that encase the purity and clarity of fruit with a style that is readily expressive for earlier release. The label celebrates the Estate's association with the musical arts through the staging of the alfresco Leeuwin Concert Series.

Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Alcohol: 13.6%
Cellaring Potential: 8-10 years

Lifted and fragrant with an abundance of limes, Nashi pears, white peaches and baby pineapples. Heightened with notes of jasmine, frangipani and lemon blossom. Nuances of nougat, cashew and toasted almonds combine with brioche, brulee and mealy notes lying beneath. The palate is bright, well weighted with volume and presence, whilst maintaining focus and definition. Pink grapefruit, white nectarine and baked apple feature with diligent oak and subtle texture. The layered and contoured mid palate is finely checked with mineral acid thread.

"Death, taxes and the quality of Leeuwin Estate chardonnay. This may 'only' be the Prelude version but its quality is as clear as a bright blue sky. Pure stone fruit, sweet oak, pear and a cleansing flush of citrus through the finish. It builds, it satisfies and it refreshes. Elegance and power in one."

"The wine feels substantial, with intensity to its apple and baked-pear flavors--'it vibrates on my palate,' one taster said. All the elements of the wine are balanced, so it would probably age; the intention, however, is to present a wine to drink on release, and there's little reason to resist its seductive beauty."

Joshua Greene, Wine and Spirits Magazine, October 2018

"Mighty good wine for a second tier. And it too has been tightened and is quite different from the previous, slightly buttery styles. I like the textural creaminess on the palate, with a sorbet, light lemon character. Very attractive wine which uses some wild ferment and solids character to influence the palate. It gets 40 per cent new oak which strikes an excellent balance with the nashi pear and lime flavours. "

"Leeuwin's "Prelude" chardonnay is routinely a pretty good offering. It's pure chardonnay. It's sunny, it's flavoursome, it's splashed with an appropriate level of oak and it remains fresh/frisky through the finish. Indeed there's almost a steeliness to this, and certainly a citrussy element, but it comes in the context of a wave of stonefruit and sweet, cedary flavour. Chardonnay 101, done well. Now or later."

"A laser beam of toast and spice are welcome warming touches to the precise core of peach and citrus flavors, set on a succulent frame, lingering on the finish. Drink now."

"Classic with a good whack of stylish French oak on the nose. Juicy and full-flavoured stone fruit: limey acidity adds strength and balance. Focused, linear and stony, with an almost saline finish."
