2012 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon

The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s most opulent & ageworthy wines from each vintage. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists.

Variety:  100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Alcohol: 13.5%
Cellaring Potential: 15-20 years
Artwork: Geoffrey Ricardo, entitled 'Forwards Backwards'

Dark ruby red with a black core. Vibrant and concentrated fruit aroma of abundant blackcurrant, dark cherries and mulberry. Beneath the lifted aromatics of anise, cocoa, clove, black olive and earthy wild field mushroom provide elegant layers to a highly expressive and complex nose. Structure and fruit weight work harmoniously on the palate, characterized by a dark fruit core of blackcurrant and forest fruits. Savoury spices of dried sage, cassia bark, and tobacco gives subtle texture, and combines with diligent oak integration and a fine acid line. All components arrive to a finish featuring slightly chalky cocoa powder-like tannins.

"This is a linear and beautiful wine as always with currant, floral, mint and wet earth. Graphite. Rust. Metal shavings. Full body, chewy and tight with reserve and intensity. A truly excellent wine. Just a baby. Screw cap. Give it another three years. But love now."

"This is the Mouton-Rothschild of Australia. Incredibly complex aromas of black currants, spice, cigar box and berry. Full body, fantastic palate with round and polished tannins. Goes for minutes. Better in 2017."

"20% hand-picked, 80% machine-harvested, destemmed, cultured yeast, matured for 21 months in French oak (40% new). The headline, the main text and the footnotes all say one thing and one thing only: purity. And I suppose I should add elegance. They simply don't come better in this mode. 13.5% alc."

"Some real vigour on the nose with berries and underlying cedar notes. Lots of ripe mulberries surrounded by succulent tannins and a taut chalky texture that needs a bit of time to come together. "

"This is the top wine out of 19 Margaret River red Bordeaux blends of the 2012 vintage tasted on 19 November 2015. The blind tasting took place in the Western Australian region itself and was for my annual Margaret River Report and also included 23 red Bordeaux blends of the 2013 vintage and 16 and 21 white Bordeaux blends of the 2015 and 2014 vintages respectively (plus one of the 2012 vintage). Blueberry fruit of concentration, intensity and persistence. The ripe fruit is buoyed by wonderful freshness and complemented by ripe, firm tannins. Fruit and freshness are seamlessly woven into the fabric of the tannins. Very harmonious. Medium-plus bodied. Very much like an elegant, top Saint-Julien."

"Intense, with mocha, cigar box and fresh loam notes providing a firm, slightly chewy background to the core of plum and black cherry flavours. Fresh mint and black olive accents linger on the finish. Drink now through 2030."

"A bold, muscular style. Hi-fi chocolate, blackberry and cedar aromas, showing classy oak and full-ripe cabernet fruit. Full-bodied, powerful, and youthful with masses of good, ripe tannins. It will age wonderfully."

"Deep, bright purple/red colour. The bouquet is also bold and bright, fresh and clean, with hi-fi chocolate and blackberry flavours, full body and powerful aftertaste. A big, bold, full-bodied cabernet with loads of panache. Muscular, concentrated, great tannins. It just needs time to mellow out a bit. Outstanding cabernet. Drink 2019 to 2039."

"The Art Series Cabernet seems to be increasing in quality nearly every vintage. The 2012 boasts plenty of sweet, cedary oak, but backs that up with layers of red currant fruit and hints of bay leaf. It's silky and harmonious on the finish, adding tea-like notes of complexity. Drink now-2025."
