Even though the area experienced its driest summer on record, the actual temperatures were not very high, resulting in a normal ripening period for Chardonnay. A vintage of above average quality.
This wine has a lovely bright medium straw green hue, which is youthful and inviting. There is an immediate impact of a pear and toasty oak complex backed by a lifted spicy fragrance reflecting the unique site where the wine was grown. This bouquet will intensify as the wine is cellared and though growing incredibly rich will always remain elegant. The palate has mouth filling and sustained fruit with the balancing acid lightly wrapped into the finish. The year and a half of bottle maturation prior to release has brought all these elements together with a fine elegant balance.
Eye-opening, beautifully focused and harmonious, balanced to frame its pear and spice flavours elegantly as the finish gallops on and on. Drink through 2005.Wine Spectator comments (as at November 1999) 93 points
Brilliant medium green-yellow; fresh, vibrant and elegant citrussy/nectarine/melon aromas area supported by perfectly judged oak on the bouquet. A lovely, vibrant and fresh palate with a scintillating array of citrus and melon fruit; the oak is no more than there in the background, the length of the palate is sustained by perfect acidity.James Halliday comments 5 stars - (tasted Feb 2001)
