2009 Art Series Shiraz »

Winemaker's Tasting Not

A dark cherry with crimson hue.

A lifted bouquet of bright red cherries, currants and blood plums complemented with complex star anise and clove. Beneath, the nose is well supported with dusty oak and hints of aromatic violets and lavender.

The palate is vibrant and expressive with subtle texture featuring red cherries and boysenberry. Diligent handling of oak exudes savoury notes of slight char combined with delicate cinnamon and nutmeg. A fine, yet balanced acidity line draws together all components leading to a finish that is both structural and complementary.

Reviews & Awards...

“Bright crimson; a super-elegant, refined Shiraz, with bright - indeed brisk - red berry flavours, fine tannins and subtle oak. Needs to build a bit more flesh, that will appear in due course. Screwcap.13.5% alc. Rating 93 To 2024.”
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion, 2012 Edition

“No question this is the best shiraz Leeuwin have released since beginning their rediscovery of this variety a few years ago. Soft and luxurious with supple fleshy fruit held with firmish tannin and quality fine grained oak. Shows the greatest density and concentration of ripe fruit of any Leeuwin shiraz, yet is retains an elegance and subtlety. Terrific wine. 95/100.”
Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2012

“Red berry fruit, oaky vanilla, sweet jam and integrated oak nose. Crisp, balanced and packed with crunchy jammy fruit. Fine earthy tannins. Needs time. 3 star wine – recommended. Drink 2012 – 2022.”
Decanter Magazine, November 2011

"92 Points. More than a little impressive, the 2009 Leeuwin Estate Shiraz Art Series is downright classy and elegant, featuring vanilla-laced aromas of red berry like fruits, leather, crushed flowers, and wild herbs to go with a medium+ bodied, beautifully balanced palate. This opens up in the glass, has a polished, seamless texture, and juicy acidity that carries into a clean, classically structured and focused finish. This is excellent now, but I also think it will age gracefully, with a decade of overall drinkability not out of the question."
The Rhone Report, Issue 12, June 2012

"91 Points. Bright ruby. Highly aromatic nose displays dark berry preserves, potpourri and cracked pepper. Lush, creamy blackberry and blueberry flavors are enlivened by peppery spices and firmed by velvety tannins. The sappy finish clings with very good intensity and features sweet dark fruit and floral nuances."
Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, July 2012
