Winemaker's Tasting Notes

The bouquet is vibrant with a concentrated fruit profile of abundant blackcurrant, dark cherries and mulberry. Beneath the lifted aromatics of anise, cocoa, clove, black olive and earthy wild field mushroom provide elegant layers to a highly expressive and complex nose.

On the palate structure and fruit weight work harmoniously, characterised by a dark fruit core of blackcurrant and forest fruits. Savoury spices of dried sage, cassia bark, and tobacco gives subtle texture, and combines with diligent oak integration and a fine acid line. All components arrive to a finish, which is featured by slightly chalky cocoa powder-like tannins.

Reviews and Awards

“Youthful crimson-purple; as is usual, a somewhat austere style, reminiscent of traditional Bordeaux; the flavours are long and persistent, and with a bit of work, the blackcurrant opens up. Screwcap. 14.0% alc. Rating 93 To 2027.”

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion, 2012 Edition

“Powerful and elegant cooler climate statement of Margaret River cabernet. This one is full ripe from this warmer season, translating into ripe firm tannins and rich concentrated dark plum and blackberry fruit characters. The balance is super. Clearly marks the emergence of Leeuwin as a serious challenger in the cabernet stakes after some years of inconsistency. 96/100.”

Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2012

“Bright ruby.  Dried cherry, redcurrant and potpourri on the nose, with spice and mineral notes adding complexity.  Deeply pitched redcurrant and bitter cherry flavors are enlivened by tangy acidity and pick up a candied rose note with air.  Shows plenty of power but this is quite graceful, taut and polished.  Sweet red fruits linger on the very long, spicy, incisive finish.  This wine will age on its balance. 92 Points.”

Josh Raynalds, New Releases from Australia, Issue 157, July/August 2011

"A textbook example of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2007 Art Series offers perfumed cassis fruit just tinged with mint and tobacco.  There's ample body yet classic Cabernet restraint, so it's not jammy or overdone.  The tannins are supple enough to make it enjoyable now, yet sufficient to see it through 2018, at least." 91 Points.

Wine Enthusiast, July 2012 Issue

“Deeply ripened, with length, structure, but perhaps a hint of excessive hang time. Deep, black-fruited and briary, with alluring notes of berries and chocolates backed by hints of undergrowth, chestnut and fragrant, fine-grained oak, it’s long, elegant and smoky, with a firm, fine-grained astringency. Long and even, with dusty nuances of dried herbs, it presents a long cassis-like palate that finishes with a hint of currant and stewed fruit. 91 points.”

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2012

“Deepish red/purple colour. Blackcurrant and mulberry aromas, fresh and fruit-driven. Lively fresh palate with bright cassis cabernet fruit and fresh acidity - but not tart nor tangy. Crisp and elegant, almost slightly lean. Lovely drinking wine, softer and more approachable than the usual Leeuwin Art Series. They have really refined the style: this is a lovely elegant Margaret River cabernet. 92 Points.”

Huon Hooke, huonhooke.com, December 2011

“Diligent vineyard attention has won Art Series Cabernet the ‘most improves’ award in the Leeuwin stable and, my goodness, has it ascended in 2007! Textbook varietal form and beautifully fine tannins.”

Tyson Stelzer, WBM, Aril 2012

“Good concentration on the nose, with sweet, bright cassis fruit and spice. Mellow palate with softer tannins – the fruit is elegant, vibrant and opulent but it still has freshness to balance the rich fruit. Good depth on the finish. Four Stars, 17 Points.”

Christelle Guibert, Decanter Magazine, June 2012

“5 Star Wine. Considerable gravitas here. Held back as long as Grange before release. Distinctive savoury black olive intense style with mineral/briary flavours and a solid core of oak and grape tannin built for the long haul. Drinking well on release. 2007 is a plush ripe tannic richly black fruited and cedar wine with a youthful firm finish and fine acidity. Australian in its rich fruit drive. The 2008 is savoury tapenade, tobacco, appealing just ripe black currant and fine oak aromas leading to a subtle palate with very fine tannins and subdued fruit running the length of the palate. Very Bordeaux in style.”
Rob Geddes, Australian Wine Vintages 2012
